A large-scale archaeological survey of Aldborough, a key Roman administrative and economic centre, has rewritten the history of Roman occupation of northeast England and stimulated a local community. A new guidebook and art exhibition have shared this knowledge, contributed to increased visitor numbers to the village, influenced English Heritage’s local strategy and contributed to local planning processes in the allocation of land for housing development.
