Improving outcomes in breast and prostate cancer

The UK has 55k new cases of breast cancer and 52k of prostate cancer annually. Cambridge researchers led the development of NICE-endorsed, free-of-charge online tools that facilitate informed treatment decision making for clinicians and their patients. PREDICT Breast has led to 7,500 NHS patients being offered chemotherapy who would otherwise have not received it and 11,000 spared unnecessary treatment; 36% of patients using PREDICT Prostate said they were less likely to choose radical treatment, producing potential savings to the NHS of £46 million/year. The impact of PREDICT Prostate is a 30% reduction in treatment recommendation variation among clinicians producing potential savings to the NHS of approximately £46 million/year as well as a 26% increase in patient decision-making confidence.
