Inventing an alternative to single-use plastic used by a UK food company

Cambridge spinout company Xampla develops next generation materials to replace the most polluting types of plastic, using natural polymers that decompose fully without harming the environment. A partnership with recipe-box firm Gousto has resulted in the world’s first edible stock sachets made from peas, a zero-waste alternative to the plastic sachets that carry vegetable stock powder. The development is part of Gousto’s ongoing work to make all the company’s packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable at its new fulfilment centre in Burton upon Trent. Xampla was spunout of the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry in 2018 with support from Cambridge Enterprise, the University’s commercialisation arm.
