Inventing ‘micro-packaging’ for vitamins used by a UK fortified drinks company

Cambridge spinout company Xampla has invented a pea protein-based microscopic capsule that protects vitamins within bottled drinks. The company is working with Britvic, a producer of soft drinks based in Hemel Hempstead, to develop technology that protects vitamins in fortified drinks from being degraded by sunlight. The partnership with Xampla supports Britvic’s ‘Healthier People, Healthier Planet’ strategy by increasing the health benefits of drinks and enabling use of clear plastic bottles, which are better for recycling than coloured bottles. Xampla was spunout of the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry in 2018 with support from Cambridge Enterprise, the University’s commercialisation arm.
