Understanding penal policymaking and the prisoner experience

Understanding the experience of imprisonment, and how this is shaped by penal policymaking and practice, is vitally important for assessing the nature and impact of our punishment practices. Researchers at Cambridge’s Prisons Research Centre (PRC) have carried out fieldwork in over 20 prisons in England, Wales and Norway, to better understand variations in prison conditions and individual experiences of imprisonment in states with different orientations to prisons and punishment.
