Reducing road freight emissions

Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) operations are essential to the UK economy but account for 6% of UK CO2 emissions. Cambridge’s Centre for Sustainable Road Freight is using engineering and organisational solutions to make road freight economically, socially and environmentally more sustainable. A major project with the Electric Roads Consortium is on the feasibility of electrifying a portion of the UK road network on the M180 motorway between Doncaster and Immingham, which could see HGVs recharging using overhead wires while travelling.
