Bridges are crucial for national infrastructure as well as for connecting communities. Researchers are using fibre optic sensors and the UK’s first real-time traffic load monitoring system to study the structure and use of two Staffordshire bridges. Their work will have a wider impact by helping Network Rail increase the service life of bridges and improve railway network productivity. This in turn will help to reduce the number of trucks on roads and reduce carbon emissions.
